Fuel Your Focus

A Microlearning Course for Lasting Energy at Work

In just 5 minutes, this learner-centred experience helps busy professionals make smarter food choices and beat the 2 PM crash: with practical tips they can use right away.

Inside the Course

Explore key moments from the learner journey.

Project Overview

My real-world coaching experience inspired this self-initiated micro-course. After conducting over 300 consultations with corporate professionals struggling with energy dips, I designed this 5-minute e-Learning solution to teach them how to fuel their focus with better food choices.

My Role

I designed and developed this course from end to end. Drawing from over 300 coaching consultations with busy professionals, I conducted informal audience research to understand common energy struggles during the workday.

I wrote the learning objectives, created a text-based storyboard, and developed the course using Articulate Storyline. I also designed custom visuals in Canva and built a printable job aid to support real-world application.

To ensure usability, I tested the experience with peers working in hybrid office environments and used their feedback to refine key moments in the course.

Tools Used

  • Articulate Storyline 360 – Course development and built-in AI voiceover

  • Canva – Visual design and job aid creation

  • Google Docs & Slides – Scripting and storyboarding

  • Loom – Peer feedback and informal usability testing

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Identify 3 foods that support steady energy

  • Explain the difference between “quick-fix” and “long-burn” foods

  • Apply a simple 3-part formula to build energizing meals

Instructional Design Strategy

This course was built using the ADDIE model and Gagné’s 9 Events of Instruction. The learning experience is scenario-based and designed to be completed in under 5 minutes—perfect for a busy professional audience.

Key ID principles used:

  • Microlearning

  • Scenario-based learning

  • Adult Learning Theory (relevant, self-directed, problem-focused)

  • Cognitive Load Theory (minimalist interface, chunked content)

Storyboarding the Experience

To plan this course, I created a detailed text-based storyboard using Google Slides. This helped me map out each screen, define interactions, and align visuals with learning objectives.

After development, I created a visual storyboard using screenshots to show how the course evolved from concept to final product.

What I Learned

This project reminded me why instructional design matters.

As a coach, I’ve seen firsthand how poor food choices drain energy, but building this course made me realize how widespread this problem is in the corporate world. When we give people the right learning experience, even a five-minute course can help them feel better, perform better, and live better.

I also sharpened my design skills: aligning learning theory with storytelling, using Articulate Storyline to build interactivity, and designing with clarity and intention. This project helped me bring learner-centred instructional design to life.

Downloadable Job Aid

To support real-world application, I created a 1-page PDF planner that helps learners build balanced, energizing meals using the formula introduced in the course.

This resource is designed for easy daily use, whether printed or saved on a device.
